Planning A Powder Room Full Of Charm

A year has flown by at our perfect little house and I’ve been having the time of my life bringing this place to life. I’m really honing in on the charming cottage vibes, mixing pattern till the cows come home, and my heart feels so happy every time I look around. I’ll literally never be completely done because I am who I am and this is simply my life’s work, but the process has been so enriching creatively and so helpful in refining my style.
One space that has been on the back burner has been our powder room. You’d think it would be more of a priority to have made pretty sooner for the sake of guests, but we admittedly don’t have people over often. As we find ourselves with an established toddler on a much more accommodating schedule and an itch to host more, we’ve made it a priority to get this space up to par with the rest of the house!
The Before
First the before, a straight up snooze fest featuring baby blue walls and boring basic everything. One thing the previous owners did do for us though is upgrade this countertop to a beige marble. It’s nice enough and I don’t hate it. It wasn’t in the cards to tear anything out of here so I’m making it work with what I’ve got, which is actually the name of the game for all 2.5 bathrooms for now and a really fun creative challenge.

The Inspiration
When I scrolled upon this image it stopped me dead in my tracks. Shoppe Amber Interiors revealed their new storefront, this unreal buildout included,

The Plans: A Breakdown
Wallpaper
Kicking it off with wallpaper, of course. No powder room is complete without wallpaper or at the very least, a dramatic paint color. I’m taking every opportunity possible to put wallpaper wherever I can in this house, and this room makes all the sense in the world. I’m manifesting a (very expensive) floral wallpaper for the dining room just around the corner from this room, so while my heart pretty much always says floral print, I settled on sweetie stripes to be more complementary vs. competing. I’ve had my eyes on this gorgeous striped wallpaper from WDC Home for ages, but spending thousands on the walls of this tiny room was unfortunately never going to happen no matter how much I dreamed.
This neutral ticking stripe wallpaper was right on budget, a great compromise and I think (hope) it’s going to be perfect. I’ll know for sure once it finally shows up in the mail.
Mirror
This Scalloped Rattan Mirror is one I’ve had bookmarked truly since around the time we first bought the house. It’s been a rollercoaster watching it go in and out of stock, experiencing heartbreak every time the link no longer worked. Luckily it always came back around, and I was finally able to pull the trigger.
With a soft scalloped border and brown rattan material, it’s textural and organic and charming and I love it. It’s been sitting in my office ever since I finally hit purchase and I can’t wait to see her in all her glory.
Vanity
For the vanity, I always knew we would paint it vs. sand and stain it and I wanted to choose something super complementary to the marble countertop. I pulled a few purple-y browns from Sherwin Williams, inspired by the counter’s veining, and ultimately went with Bitter Chocolate. It’s a fabulous purple-toned brown and I’m super happy with how it’s turning out.

Lighting
In another world I would’ve loved to do sconce lighting on either side of the mirror, but working with what I had I went looking for a streamlined fixture that would sit more flush as opposed to hang down over the mirror. I found this one with reeded glass and antique brass finish and my fingers are staying crossed it turns out just right!
Faucet
I knew from the start that I wanted to incorporate this classic polished brass faucet with precious cross handles into the design, and finding my inspiration (above) really solidified it was the right choice!
Art
I found this precious pair of floral paintings at an antique store and I love them so much. They’re a perfect touch of grandma and I think they are going to add even more charm to this little space!

Hardware
I admittedly haven’t landed on which cabinet knobs to go for (though I’ll probably end up just getting some simple antique brass ones from Amazon!) and I’m still sourcing everything for the cafe curtain. Thinking I’ll probably get this outside-mount rod from Rejuvenation and then curtains from Etsy.
I went to my favorite Zara Home for the toilet paper holder and hand towel bar and I love how simple yet elevated they are. So much better than something from Amazon or Home Depot.
That covers everything for now! I’ll be sure to share all the last details that might get added last minute once I get around to sharing the finished space. I’m having all the girls on my husband’s side over in a couple weekends for a fun little happy hour so if all goes as it should, it’ll be pretty and finished by then.
